Most repair calls start with something you noticed. Here is what the common signs normally point to, so you know roughly what you are dealing with before anyone arrives.
The Water Level Keeps Dropping
Every pool loses a little to evaporation. Losing noticeably more than that usually means a leak in the plumbing, the shell, or a fitting. Wet spots in the yard, a soggy patch near the equipment pad, or a pump that keeps losing prime all point the same direction. Leaks get more expensive the longer they run, because moving water erodes whatever it is running through.
The Heater Fires and Then Shuts Off
Short cycling is usually airflow, water flow, or a sensor, not a dead heater. Low flow from a dirty filter or a partly closed valve will trip a heater safety switch on purpose. That is worth ruling out before anyone quotes you a replacement.
The Pump Is Loud, or Will Not Pull Water
A screeching pump is often a failing bearing. A pump that will not prime is usually air getting in on the suction side, through the lid seal, the basket, or a cracked fitting. Running a pump dry damages the seal quickly, so shut it down until someone can look at it.
The Water Will Not Stay Clear
Cloudy water that resists chemicals is usually a filtration problem rather than a chemistry problem. A worn cartridge, channelled sand, or a broken lateral will keep pushing fine debris back into the pool no matter how much you add to it.
The Lights Are Out
Pool lights are a sealed fixture repair, and on older pools they are often a sensible moment to move to LED. We test the fixture, the transformer, and the run before recommending anything.
The Surface or Waterline Looks Wrong
Rough patches and a white crust along the tile are not equipment faults. Heavy mineral buildup is a job for pool tile cleaning, and a surface that has worn through needs resurfacing rather than a repair.
